While the name and date vary somewhat in\u00a0Buddhist countries according to national customs, it is generally observed on the full moon day in\u00a0May. In 1999, Vesak received official recognition from the United Nations as a major world\u00a0religious holiday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How many Buddhists are there in the United States?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to a study by the Pew Research Center, Religious Composition by Country, 2010-2050,\u00a0there are more than 3.5 million Buddhists in the U.S., making it the third largest religion in the\u00a0country. The majority of American Buddhists are Asian Americans, but there are Buddhists in the\u00a0United States from every ethnic and cultural background.
